A rare opportunity has arisen with a highly established and successful SME in Winchester. They are seeking an experienced Accounting professional, with leadership skills who wishes to make the next step within their career.

  • Location: Office based role in central Winchester
  • Hours: Monday – Friday 0900-1700
  • Salary: up to £40,000 per year plus annual bonus
  • 30 days holiday and additional flex days

Initially shadowing and reporting to the current Accounts Manager, you will then be progressing within the next 12 months to overseeing a team of 2 accounts assistants. In view of the level of responsibilities you will be undertaking, it is imperative that you have a strong background and qualifications to match this role. You will  possess a relevant degree and are already part-qualified (ACCA) with a willingness to study further.

As the role evolves from Assistant Accounts Manager, to Manager, you will take full responsibility for the company’s daily financial operations, supported by a team of two Accounts Assistants. You will lead the finance function, deliver accurate and timely reporting, and ensure strong internal controls.

Assistant Accounts Manager responsibilities:

  • Controlling BACS submission processes and managing banking authorities.
  • Maintaining controls over settlements and  adjustments, and commissions.
  • Overseeing payroll, pensions, benefits, and HMRC submissions.
  • Producing timely monthly management accounts and ensure full reconciliation of all ledgers and control accounts.
  • Managing the year-end audit and liaise with external auditors.
  • Leading, supporting, and developing the accounts team to ensure high-quality delivery and team resilience.
  • Contributing financial insights to business decisions and identifying process improvements.
  • Supporting system and reporting enhancements and implement process improvements across the department.

This role would suit someone with a solid accounting background, ready to move into a management role – or already in one and looking for a stable, long-term opportunity.

Essential skills, experience & qualifications:

  • A relevant degree and very strong Microsoft Excel skills (essential).
  • At least 5 years’ experience within an accounts role
  • Highly numerate, detail-oriented, and organised.
  • Hands-on experience in accounting and financial reporting.
  • Part-qualified (ACCA) or have already started with your ACCA qualifications.
  • Experience with Sage Accounts.

A clear communicator and team player with the confidence to take ownership.
